I-10 closed from Lafayette east to Iberville, winter storm saturating South Louisiana with ice and snow
The Department of Transportation and Development has closed Interstate 10 from its junction with Interstate 49 in Lafayette east to the Iberville Parish line due to freezing rain, sleet and snow whipping throughout the area.
Traffic is being detoured via I-49 north to U.S. 190 at Opelousas.
How long that highway will be open eastward is matter of how long it will be before bridges and overpasses become too dangerous to travel.
Freezing rain and sleet had spread over most of Southwest and South Central Louisiana by 8 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.
The winter storm has shut down public and private activity and services from the Louisiana border east to the Florida parishes.
The NWS expects the freezing rain, sleet and snow to continue through the day and into the night and with temperatures well below freezing into Wednesday anticipates heavy icing on all exposed surfaces, including roads, bridges, trees and power lines.
