A Tuesday traffic crash led to the driver in jail on three counts of battery on a police officer and two Eunice police officers suspended pending an investigation.
Following the report of a truck that plowed into Bertrand’s Printing on North 8th St., a scuffle ensued between the first officer on the scene after the driver of the truck allegedly spit in the officer’s face.
Andy L. Rider, 31, was apparently on his way home to the 200 block of North 8th Street when his vehicle caused serious damage to the business’ store front shortly after 9 p.m. Police arrived to find Rider exit the vehicle and react unresponsive to police, who said that Rider fled on foot and attempted to entered a residence that was not his.
When police arrived, Rider began to become belligerent, assaulted and even spit in one officer’s face, according to the police radio logs. Police said that Rider punched, kicked and attempted to assault an officer with a chair.
Rider’s action prompted taser deployment by the officer. Rider was dropped to the ground only to get up after being tased and allegedly further assault the officer, authorities said.
Calls made to the 911 Center indicated that neighbors had taken note of the incident. Many of the callers claimed that two other officers had arrived on the scene as the first, initial officer struggled on the ground with Rider.
Callers voiced shock that the other two officers were allegedly standing by and watching the officer struggle with Rider on the ground. According to records, callers stated that the two officers did not assist the one officer with Rider.
Radio logs indicate that a K-9 unit was called out and that a “dog bite” was reported at the scene. It is unknown if the K-9 officer bit Rider. Reports indicated that pepper spray was deployed during the altercation.
Rider was finally detained and arrested. He was charged with three counts of battery on a police officer, disturbing the peace, reckless operation, open container in vehicle, simple criminal damage to property, two counts of aggravated assault and second degree battery.
The officers who allegedly stood by without assisting were suspended, with pay, regarding an investigation.
The identity of the officers involved was not provided by the department.
