Dr. William J. Nunez, III, vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Indiana, Kokomo, has been appointed chancellor of LSU Eunice. He is a native of New Orleans.

Site clearing is under way for the location of the new volunteer fire station to be built on Guillory Road east of Eunice. Chief Gerald LeJeune said the station may be open by January.

A violent thunderstorm produced lightning which gutted the resident of Dr. and Mrs. Reggie Segar in Acadian Acres.

St. Edmund’s Scotty Richard was named Class A baseball coach of the year. Two of his players, pitcher Chris West and outfielder Brad Fontenot, were named to the all-state team. Josh Bollich was an honorable mention member. The Blue Jays won the state championship this year.

Eunice High’s Andre Vige was named honorable mention on the 4A all-state baseball team.

Softball players named to the academic all-state teams include Eunice High’s Casey Aguillard and St. Edmund’s Nikki Theriot and Amy Hollier.

Winners at the Acadiana Senior Olympics include Red Aucoin and Jeff Vizinat, silver, in the mens doubles, and Willie Glasscock and Harold Pellerin, gold in their doubles bracket.

Eunice High’s Avery St. Andre and Syreeta Lyons have been selected to attend Pelican Boys and Girls State at LSU.

St. Landry District Attorney Morgan J. Goudeau said he will not seek re-election. He has held the past 23 years. He endorsed Felix Dejean’s bid for the job. Also in race will be Earl Taylor.

Gary “Goose” Fontenot announced his candidacy for Eunice mayor. He is a former full-time fireman who now holds a volunteer post. Also announcing for the race is Gil Young, who has been interim mayor since the death of Hubert Rougeau. Young is retired from Ardoin’s Funeral Home. Dale Soileau is seeking the District 4 council seat, as are Johnny Reed and Brother Atchison.

The Moosa Memorial Hospital board continues discussions with Lafayette General Hospital as the two explore a joint venture operating company, according to Moosa administrator Craig Ortego.

Gary W. Miller, former advertising manager for The Eunice News, has been named retail advertising manager of The Daily Advertiser in Lafayette.

Paul DeRousselle, II, was named sixth-grade student of the year at Central Elementary School.

The Police Jury named Dr. Russell Pavich of Eunice as St. Landry Parish Coroner to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Dr. David Carriere. Pavich was nominated by juror Gary Courville.

The City Council adopted an employee handbook presented by Assistant City Clerk Jackie Thibodeaux, who said it was compiled with input from the LMA.

Rochelle Anne Young Duplechin and Monty Nicholas Heinen, both of Eunice, are candidates this month for doctor of medicine degrees from LSU Medical Center, Shreveport.
