Crowley rallies past Lady Cats
The Eunice High Lady Bobcats dropped their District 4-4A opener Tuesday night as they fell to the Crowley High Ladies by a 61-54 margin at the Bobcat gym.
The Lady Cats fell behind Crowley by a 12-5 margin after one quarter and trailed 24-12 at the half. But the Eunice girls would slowly pull themselves into the game during the third quarter.
Crowley appeared to be putting the game away when Myah Rodgers hit a field goal at the 5:31 mark of the third quarter to give the Ladies a 31-18 lead.
The Lady Cats refused to fold as they outscored Crowley 22-4 over the remainder of the third quarter to hold a 40-35 lead heading into the final eight minutes of the game.
Hali Jack and Dashaya Vigers led the charge for the Lady Cats in the third quarter with 16 and seven points, respectively.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Cats increased their lead to 44-37 at the 6:10 mark of the quarter and equaled their biggest lead at 46-39 at the 5:36 mark of the quarter thanks to two free throws by Jack.
But the Ladies began to cut into the Eunice lead, pulling with two points at 53-51 with 2:02 left in the game.
A little less than a minute later, Crowley’s Chelsea Yokum tied the game with driving basket following a Eunice turnover.
The Lady Cats never recovered as the Ladies would out-score Eunice 6-1 over the final minute to seal the victory.
The lone point for the Lady Cats came on a free throw by Mia Lejeune.
Jack led the Eunice scoring for the game with 25 points.
She finished with six goals from beyond the 3-point arc. Vigers finished with 15 points and Beulah Bradley added nine for the Lady Cats.
Nykeila Winters led Crowley in scoring with 19 points. Rodgers added 12 points and Teara Breaux had nine for the Ladies.
The Lady Bobcats will continue district play on the road Tuesday to face Opelousas High.
EHS boys 61, Lake Arthur 44
The Eunice High Bobcats halted a five-game losing streak Tuesday night with a 61-44 victory over the Lake Arthur High Tigers in basketball action at the Bobcat gym.
Coach Chad Andrepont’s Bobcats improved to 4-10 with the victory.
The Cats used eight field goals from beyond the three-point line to spur them to the win. The Tigers weren’t bad from beyond the arc, either, as they hit six from 3-point range.
The Bobcats slowly pulled away from the Tigers in the opening quarter with Kevin Williams knocking down a field goal at the buzzer to give the Cats a 15-12 lead.
The Cats began to pull away in the second quarter as Malik Poullard converted two three-point goals and a two-point goal to lead Eunice to a 32-19 halftime lead.
Lake Arthur outscored the Bobcats 17-15 in the third quarter to pull within 11 points, but the Bobcats used an 8-1 run during the opening minutes of the fourth quarter to push their lead to 55-37 with four minutes left in the game.
The Cats’ defensive play limited the Tigers to only seven points in the final quarter.
Nathan Hibbitts led the scoring for Lake Arthur with 12 points.
Brendan Johnson and Dalton Stokes finished with nine and seven points, respectively, for the Tigers.
Malik Poullard topped the Bobcats in scoring with 18 points.
Poullard ended the game with five 3-point field goals.
Devon Freeman added 11 points and Williams chipped in with 10 points.
Halen Jack and Travis Godfrey finished with seven and six points, respectively.
The Bobcats will open district play at Opelousas High on Tuesday.
