RAYNE – Eunice High pitchers Caleb Taylor and Gunner Fontenot made a first-inning run stand up as the Bobcats claimed a 1-0 victory over the Rayne Wolves in Acadiana Metro League action here on Wendesday.
Cade Richard opened the game with a single and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Logan Manuel. Fontenot later singled to score Richard and give the Cats a 1-0 lead against Rayne pitcher Hunter Meche.
The Bobcats threatened to add to the lead in the second. With two out, Christian Taylor singled and Jayden Brasseaux drew a walk. Richard singled to load the bases, but Meche retired Manuel to end the threat.
The Wolves touched Caleb Taylor for a double to open the bottom of the second, but the rising senior retired the next two batters, then picked off the runner to escape the threat.
Meche, meanwhile, settled in to shut out the Cats over the third and fourth innings, keeping the score at 1-0. Taylor gave up a one-out triple in the bottom of the fourth, but kept his team in the lead by retiring the side on a strikeout and a ground out.
Rayne relievers escaped a Bobcat threat in the fifth and sixth inning. Richard singled to open the fifth and moved to second on Manuel’s sacrifice bunt, but the next two batters were retired to end the inning. In the sixth, Christian Lejeune singled and was sacrificed to second on Caleb Taylor’s bunt. But, again, the Cats were unable to get the runner home.
Caleb Taylor allowed two hits and one walk in five innings of work for the Bobcats. He finished with seven strikeouts. Fontenot entered the game in the sixth and did not allow a hit in his two innings of mound work. He walked two and struck out five to earn a save.
The Cats will continue Metro play on Monday when they host Port Barre. The Cats will host Sacred Heart on Wednesday.
