Bearcats ended season with win over St. Edmund

First-round bye for Bearcats

The Basile High Bearcats will take Friday off after receiving a bye in the first round of the Class 1A State Playoffs. The Bearcats earned the number two seed in the bracket thanks to a 9-1 record during the regular season.
The Bearcats finished the regular season with a 20-14 victory over the St. Edmund Blue Jays. That win enabled the Bearcats to capture the District 5-1A title.
Senior running back Gabe Fontenot contined to be a strong offenseive force for the Bearcats against the Jays.
Fontenot finished the game with 181 yards on 20 carries. He scored two touchdowns on runs of 71 and 28 yards. Fontenot also had a 66-yard run for the Bearcats.
Quarterback Tray David has also been a consistent performer for the Bearcats over the course of the season.
Against St. Edmund, David connected with Jarred Belle on a 34-yard scoring pass which gave Basile an early 7-0 lead against the Jays.
David completed three of six passes for 87 yards in the contest.
After enjoying the bye week, the Bearcats will take to the field next week against either number 18 seed Homer or 15-seed Montgomery, who will face each other this week in the first round of the 1-A bracket.
Montgomery enters the state playoffs with an overall record of 3-7, while Homer went 2-8 for the season.
The Bearcats appear to have a favorable position in the bracket. In past seaons the Bearcats have made a nice run in the opening two games before having to face perrenial power Kentwood.
This year, however, the Bearcats won’t have to face the Kangaroos until the state championship game, if both teams can advance to that point.
Kentwood (9-1) has a first-round bye as well. The Kangaroos will take on the winner of the opening round winner between Plain Dealing (3-7) and Oberlin (4-6). Plain Dealing is the 17th seed and Oberlin enters the playoffs as the 16th seed.
