Doctors talk at Lung Cancer Awareness luncheon
Savoy Medical Center and The Cancer Center of Acadiana at Savoy Medical Center recently held a Lung Cancer Awareness Community Luncheon on Nov. 20. The event was free to the public.
Over 50 health care professionals and patients attended the event held at Ruby’s Restaurant and Courtyard.
Guest speakers were Dr. Kristen Sager, oncologist at The Cancer Center of Acadiana at Savoy Cancer Center in Mamou; and Dr. Gary Guidry, pulmonologist at The Lung Mass Clinic at Lafayette General.
Guidry spoke about the newer techniques for diagnosing lung cancer. He also discussed endobronchial ultrasound and navigation bronchoscopy. These two techniques are used to more accurately diagnose and determine the extent of lung cancer.
Sager also presented information on newer treatment options now available at the Savoy Cancer Center in Mamou, including targeted therapy and immunotherapy. Other treatment options were reviewed, such as surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
