Nominations sought for award to recognize women

The Women’s Leadership Council of the St. Landry-Evangeline United Way is sponsoring a “women only” luncheon on Feb. 12 at the Opelousas Civic Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Dr. Mia Ben, a pediatrician with All Kids Pediatrics of Opelousas will serve as honorary chair. The event will also recognize two women leaders in the community who have distinguished themselves as caring, compassionate philanthropists and community volunteers.
Nominations for the awards are being sought from the community, United Way Agency Partners and other non-profit organizations operating within St. Landry and Evangeline Parishes. For nomination forms, call 942-7815 or email sfisher2011@att.net.
“This is our fourth year hosting this event, and we wanted to choose an honorary chairwoman who exemplifies the spirit of giving and who has the influence to help move her community in a positive direction,” states Ginger LeCompte, executive director of the St. Landry-Evangeline United Way.
Ben has received numerous awards and recognitions, including “Keeper of the Dream” from the Terrebone Parish Branch of the NAACP; “Woman of the Year National Association of University Women Assumption Parish Branch”; and “Woman of the Year” St. Landry Retired Teachers Association.
Ben also serves the community through her past and current participation on non-profit boards such as Boys and Girls Club, St. Landry Abilities, and J.S. Clark Charter School. She also owns, directs and participates in Acadiana Zydeco Women’s Tackle Football, and holds various positions in Ebenezer Baptist Church. Dr. Ben is married to Karl Ben, and has three children – two boys and a girl.
Stated Josie Frank, president of the Women’s Leadership Council, “We are so excited to have Dr. Ben serve as our honorary chair. She is inspiring, and her accomplishments are making a difference in many peoples’ lives.”
