Lady Jays advance to regionals

The St. Edmund Lady Jays rallied from a 3-0 deficit to earn a 7-3 win over Lafayette Christian Acadmey Saturday in the opening round of the Class 1-A playoffs.
St. Edmund (12-14) will now face the winner between No. 3 Hanson Memorial and No. 30 Haynesville.
“Hanson is a very good, team” St. Edmund coach Tad Richard said. “They are ranked No. 3 for a reason.”
LCA (14-14) jumped out an early lead in the top of the first inning, begun when Bailey Leger walked and scored on a double by Madi Martin.
Miyah Portales walked and Leah Gaspard hit a two-RBI double as the Lady Knights pushed ahead, 3-0.
St. Edmund closed the gap to 3-1 in the bottom of the inning when Heidi Bieber tripled and scored on a hit by Kasey Lafleur.
The Lady Jays exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second to put the game away.
Elissa David walked and scored on a hit by Preslie Vidrine.
Abby Miller walked and Bieber singled to load the bases.
Sydney Thibodeaux then drove in Vidrine and Miller as the Lady Jays led, 4-3.
Bieber crossed home plate on a hit by Lafleur, while Thibodeaux scored on a single by Gabby Fontenot.
The Lady Jays added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Miller singled and scored on a double by Bieber.
After scoring three runs in the first inning, the Lady Knights were then limited to four hits and a walk.
Lafleur earned the win as she struck out six, walked three and allowed three runs on six hits.
“She settled down after the first inning,” Richard said. “She was nervous as sbe didn’t throw her normal stuff as she walked two batters and gave up two hits.”
Bieber went 3-for-4 with a single, double and a triple and scored two runs.
Lafleur went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
