Police: Man, 92, killed after walking onto highway

A 92-year-old man was killed when he walked onto La. 182 north of La. 358 in St. Landry Parish at about 7:20 p.m. Sunday, according to a Louisiana State Police Troop I news release.
The victim is identified at Dale Britt of Opelousas.
Police said Corey Jackson, 27, of Opelousas, was driving a 2011 Kia Rio southbound on La. 182, about one mile north of La. 358. For unknown reasons, Britt walked from the roadway edge into the southbound lane of La. 182 directly into the path of the Kia, police said.
Jackson was unable to avoid the crash and Britt was struck by the front of the vehicle, police said.
Jackson was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and sustained minor injuries. He was take to a local hospital and treated.
Britt was pronounced dead on scene by a St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office representative.
Impairment is not considered to be a factor in the crash. Troopers determined Jackson was not impaired. Standard toxicology samples were taken from Britt and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
