Changes ahead for St. Edmund athletics

By Tom Dodge

There will be a new head football coach and athletic director this fall at St. Edmund, according to principal Laurie Doucet.
“We will take applications until March 4,” she said. “The committee is prepared look and the applications and then determine how many we want to interview.
“We are using our coaches handbook as a springboard for the questions we will ask and the standards that are set for our new athletic director/head football coach and the character we want that person to model.”
Thomas David took over at St. Edmund in 2010 and was the sixth St. Edmund athletic director since 1998.
David finished with a 43-26 overall record, including the 2014 district title as well as making it to the quarterfinals in 2010 and the semifinals in 2013.
“Coach David brought a talent and perspective to the school that was needed for the time he was here,” Doucet said. “He was here quite a while compared to a lot coaches in other places.
David was the 14th head football coach since 1955 with Ed Cormier and Scott Richard serving two different times.
David finished ranked in the top five in wins behind Joe Nagata (88-49-1), Ed Cormier ( 70-34-2), Marion Fruge (50-31-6), David (43-26) and Richard (41-19).
“Coach David did impact the school in a positive way,” Doucet said. “And that is what we want the new AD to take from that and continue building.”
Doucet said she is confindent that the committee will make the right choice as they complete the process.
“We are looking for whoever is going to bring the best benefit to our students,” Doucet said, “who is going to impact both academics and athletics with the greatest potential.”
The principal said she is excited about the future of Blue Jay athletics.
“You never know what the outcome will be,” she said. “But we are certainly thinking that the future of St. Edmund athletics is going to keep building and get stronger.”
Doucet said they plan to have a new head football coach in time for spring football practices.
“We hope to have a new athletic director chosen within two weeks after the application period closes,” she said.
“We are going to follow the process correctly as the Diocese requires,” she said.
“We will do what is best for the school and for the children.”
