Jays visit struggling Hurricanes
The Blue Jays exploded for 63 points and 537 yards of total offense against Catholic High of Pointe Coupee to open District 6-1A play.
The next stop on their path to the district title is a trip to LeBeau to face the North Central Hurricanes.
“I didn’t expect that kind of a game,” St. Edmund head coach Thomas David said. “Things just worked out for us as we moved the ball well and didn’t have any turnovers.”
North Central (1-5, 0-1) opened district last week with a 40-6 loss to Sacred Heart of Ville Platte.
The Trojans were led by quarterback Wesley Fontenot who completed 11-of-16 passes for 149 yards and five touchdowns against the Hurricanes.
The Sacred Heart defense limited North Central to negative yards rushing and picked off three Hurricane passes and recovered four fumbles.
“The key to a win is for our defense to play well,” David said. “We want to force turnovers and shorten the field for our offense.”
North Central only dressed out 14 players for the game as the Hurricanes’ program continues to struggle. Their only victory came against winless Gueydan (38-14) as the Canes have lost to Pine Prairie (15-0), Jeanerette (12-8), Highland Baptist (44-6), Bunkie (36-0) and Sacred Heart.
“You put 11 on the field at a time,” David said. “It doesn’t matter how many are on the sideline. North Central will put some good athletes on the field.
Drew Brown is leading the Blue Jay offense with 948 yards passing (77-of-142,10 INT, 17 TD) and 669 yards rushing (105-669 yards, 8 TD).
Stone LeJeune is the leading receiver with 25 catches for 336 yards and seven touchdowns.
“It was good to start district with a win,” David said. “Our goal is to get better every week so we can be playing our best ball by the time we make the playoffs.”
