Cigarette butt littering measure clears House

Littering is already illegal, but doing so with cigarette butts would be a specific offense under a bill approved by the Louisiana House.
Lawmakers overwhelmingly approved a bill that would make tossing a cigarette butt on the ground or out of a car window illegal.
Violators would be hit with a $250 fine and eight hours of community service for their first offense.
Under the proposal, repeat offenders would face even stiffer penalties.
While state law already penalizes litterers, the current definition of “litter” does not include cigarettes or cigarette butts.
The bill now heads to the Senate for approval.
If becoming law, the statute is likely to be just as diligently enforced by authorities as current littering laws.
