Lafayette man accused of trying to kill officer
A man who allegedly exchanged gunfire with a police officer is recovering from wounds at a hospital and will be charged with several felonies when released.
A woman is accused of being a principal to the shooting and of obstruction of justice.
Thursday night, police went to an apartment complex on West Willow attempting to locate a suspect believed to be involved in a shooting the night before.
Officers had received information that the person living at the apartment possibly knew the whereabouts of the suspects. Officers were given permission to search the apartment.
As one of the officers was searching a rear room he was confronted with the suspect hiding in a closet. Gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and the officer, with both being struck.
The officer moved to safety at which time the suspect jumped out of a window and fled the scene on foot. The officer was transported to an area hospital and is listed in stable condition.
A short time later Lafayette Police received information that the suspect had made his way to the truck stop on North University Avenue attempting to get a ride.
Officers were dispatched to the area and observed a truck exiting the parking lot with the headlights off and a person in the passenger seat attempting to avoid detection.
Lafayette Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the vehicle refused to stop.
The vehicle was eventually stopped on the westbound lane of I-10 near mile marker 80 with the assistance of the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office, Crowley Police Department, the Louisiana State Police and the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting suspect was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital. The driver of the vehicle was detained.
The incident is being investigated by the Lafayette Police Department’s Officer Involved Shooting Team. The officer involved in the shooting is a 3 ½ year veteran of the Lafayette Police Department.
Chase Chaisson, 23, is accused ot attempted 1st degree murder of a police officer, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, 2nd degree kidnapping and injury to a police K-9.
Patricka Ledet, 21, is accused of principal to attempted 1st degree murder and obstruction of justice.
