Man allegedly deserts child at Dollar General to do 'business', doesn't return

Magee

Zachary Police have arrested a man charging him with deserting his son at the Dollar General on Plank Road Saturday night.
According to an arrest affidavit, Gary Magee, 34, of Brian Rd. in Zachary, left his 6-year-old son alone the store.
Police were called to the Dollar General about a child being found in the store alone about 7:15 p.m. on Mar. 15.
Zachary Police Chief David McDavid said the boy told detectives that he came to the store with his father, Magee, and then Magee allegedly told his son that he had to leave him alone to meet with some people to “do business.”
McDavid says Magee then left the store.
The child was taken to the Zachary Police Department, and East Baton Rouge Child Services were notified, however they were unsuccessful in contacting Magee.
EBRCS took the boy into their custody until Magee could be reached, McDavid said.
Later that same night, about 9:30 p.m., Zachary detectives spoke with Magee via telephone, but he refused to come to the police department.
Following a tip, authorities found Magee at the Auto Zone on Main Street in Zachary, where he was taken into custody, McDavid said.
He was charged with child desertion and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
Magee was later transported to East Baton Rouge Parish Prison where his bond was set at $1,750.
