Budget standoff: TOPs students may have to pay half of their tuition; safety-net hospital face deep cuts

Students receiving TOPS may have to pay as much as half of their tuition bills from their own pocket this year, and safety-net hospitals throughout the state for low income are looking at deep cuts if House Republicans reject Gov. John Bel Edwards’ plan to raise money this special session.

LSU’s medical school in Shreveport faces cuts under current budget

Following a move to transfer funding from the state’s TOPS college scholarship program to safety-net hospitals last Thursday, the LSU Medical School at Shreveport still will be $35.6 million in the red, the chancellor warned Sunday, forcing the school to make cuts to all the medical programs.

Budget battle takes shape in House panel

The state’s budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1 began its tumultuous journey through the Legislature Monday with large-scale changes made by House Appropriations Chairman Cameron Henry, R-Metairie, in large part to fund TOPS, the state’s popular tuition-paying program.
