The selection of a native of the small town of Basile as the next bishop of the Diocese of Lafayette is not as unprecedented as you might think.
The Diocese of Lafayette announced this morning that Most Rev. J. Douglas Deshotel has been appointed to succeed Most Rev. Michael Jarrell, DD, as bishop of the diocese.
A news conference is scheduled at 11 a.m. today at the Immaculata Center in Lafayette to confirm the announcement.

Bishop Michael Jarrell has issued a letter and released the report of a Blue Ribbon Committee on Sacred Heart High School in Ville Platte. In his letter, Jarrell announced at the school's principal, Diane Fontenot, has submitted her resignation effectively immediately.
