Trek to state tourney begins

It is a new season for several local teams as the LHSAA released the softball playoff brackets Thursday.
No. 14 St. Edmund (11-14) was set to face No. 19 Lafayette Christian Academy 4 p.m. Saturday at Lady Jay Field.
In Class 2-A, No. 20 Sacred Heart of Ville Platte (12-12) will visit No. 13 Opelousas Catholic 4:30 p.m. Monday.
In Class 3-A, No. 12 Iota (15-12) will entertain No. 21 Port Allen at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The Lady Bulldogs won their second straight district title with an 11-10 thriller over Westlake.
“We have had many games throughout the season where we had to battle back to tie it up or go ahead, but this game they showed a whole new level of fight,” Iota head softball coach Leah Andrus said. “We fought to stay alive with two outs in the sixth and two outs in the eighth inning.
“The district title is something to be proud of,” she added. “Now all we can do is prepare mentally and physically to play Lady Dog softball one game at a time in the playoffs.”
No. 28 Church Point (12-15) will travel to No. 8 Winfield 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Also in Class 3-A, No. 8 Pine Prairie (24-5) was set to host No. 25 Berwick at 6 p.m. Saturday.
The Eunice Lady Bobcats finished as the No. 33 team in Class 3-A after being forced to forfeit two games because of an academically ineligible player.
After the 0-6 start, the Lady Cats closed the season with an 8-4 run, including a 6-4 record in District 5-3A behind Pine Prairie and Church Point.
