Gents cruise past Jays
OPELOUSAS – The Crowley Gents handed the St. Edmund Blue Jays a 13-3 loss in the opening game of the Westminster Christian Academy baseball tournament Thursday.
Crowley jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Andre Larry, Joe Selvester and Cameron Ledet scored for the Gents.
St. Edmund closed the the gap to 3-2 in the top of the third inning, begun when Phillippe Aguillard walked and scored on Cole Bergeron’s triple.
Bergeron then scored when William Chachere singled.
Crowley exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth to put the game away as the Gents took advantage of two walks and four hits.
Pate Broussard, Zack Breaux and Larry singled, while Alex Ashby and Selvester both walked and all five scored.
Evan Daigle doubled, stole third, but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
The Blue Jays pushed a run across in the top of the sixth inning as Chachere singled and scored on a double by Jack Brown.
Crowley then completed the 10-run rule game with five more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Gents took advantage of two walks, an error and three hits including a triple by Daigle.
Chachere went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored to lead the Blue Jays, while Bergeron went 1-for-3 with a RBI and run scored.
Brown (1-for-3, RBI), Gibson LaFleur (1-for-3), Drake Brunet (1-for-2) and Miller (1-for-2) all collected hits for the Jays.
St. Edmund entertains Sacred Heart of Ville Platte at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a rematch of last year’s Class 1-A quarterfinal 4-2 win by the Jays.
