Lady Jays earn key win over OC

St. Edmund stunned former district rival Opelousas Catholic as the 1-A Lady Jays grabbed a 3-1 win over the 2-A Lady Vikings on Tuesday.
The win helps the Lady Jays stay in the top 16 of the power rankings and earn a home game in the first round of the playoffs.
After two scoreless innings, St. Edmund (10-8, 3-4 in District 5-1A) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Heidi Bieber reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a hit by Baylee Lafleur.
OC (14-14, 8-2 in District 5-2A) tied the game in the top of the fourth when Amelia Pitre doubled up the middle and scored on a sacrifice by Elizabeth Mouret.
St. Edmund responded in the bottom of the frame with a run when Maddie Andrus was hit by a pitch and scored when Heidi Bieber reached on a fielder’s choice.
The Lady Vikings threatened in the top of the fifth when Madison Nicholas walked but was picked off at third by catcher Lafleur.
OC seemed poised to possibly retake the lead in the top of the sixth when Courtney Thomassee singled and Pitre was hit by a pitch.
But the key play of the game then took place when Mia Mantaneres lined out to Lady Jay pitcher Kasey Lafleur who then tossed the ball to first baseman Andrus who doubled up Pitre.
Thomassee was also running on the play and was tagged out to complete the triple play.
The Lady Jays added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Jami Lebeouf singled to center and scored on a hit by Bieber.
OC threatened in the top of the seventh when Tori Collins blasted a two-out double to the fence but could not score.
Kasey Lafleur earned the win as she allowed one run on four hits with two strikeouts, two walks and a hitbatsman.
Tori Collins suffered the loss for OC as she allowed three runs on four hits with three walks and a hitbatsman.
Bieber went 1-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored.
Baylee Lafleur went 1-for-2 with a walk and a RBI.
The LHSAA brackets will be released on Thursday.
