Bobcats grab key district win over OHS
OPELOUSAS – The Eunice High Bobcats scored seven runs over the final two innings to take a 13-4 victory over the Opelousas High Tigers here Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Field.
The victory by Coach Scott Phillips’ Bobcats improved their overall record to 16-6 and their district mark to 6-1.
The Bobcats resume District 4-4A play on Thursday when they host Washington-Marion in a game set for a 6 p.m. start. Eunice High was scheduled to play the Notre Dame Pioneers in Crowley on Wednesday.
The Cats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Andrew Lomas singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Scotty Bihm. The run scored on a grounder by Jordan Comeaux.
The Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run single by Garret Pythian against Eunice starter Scott Lafleur. The Cats tied the game in the second on a run-scoring single by Lomas, but the Tigers regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the inning.
The Bobcats used a three-run third inning to take a 5-3 advantage. That inning was highlighted by a double off the bat of Wes Hebert and run-scoring singles by Brennan Ashley and Lafleur.
Pythian’s RBI single cut the lead to 5-4, but the Bobcats scored a run in the fourth inning to go up 7-5.
Courtesy runner Taylor Hanks scored the run on a single by Comeaux. Hanks ran for Bobcat catcher Gunner Fontenot who led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch.
It was in the sixth, though, that the Bobcats began to take control of the game.
Fontenot led off the inning with a double and scored on a single by Bihm, who would later score on an errant throw.
The Cats scored two more runs thanks to walks to build a 10-4 lead. The Cats added three more runs in the seventh on RBIs from Hebert, Ashley, and A. P. Sonnier.
Lafleur, who improved his record to 2-0, responded to his team’s run support by shutting out the Tigers over the final four innings.
The senior scattered six hits, walked three, and striking out eight in his complete game performance.
Daryl Wheeler suffered the loss for the Tigers. Wheeler pitched into the sixth inning before being relieved by Tanny Wheeler.
