Kaplan sweeps Jays
The Kaplan Pirates left St. Edmund with a pair of wins in their possession after a 39-35, 81-57 sweep Monday at the Blue Jay gym.
The Lady Jays and Lady Pirates battled early as the game was tied three times in the first quarter
Maggie Larriviere led St. Edmund in the period as the game was tied 10-10 heading into the second quarter.
Kaplan outscored the Lady Jays 12-6 in the second period to push ahead 22-16 at intermission.
A trey by Elissa David and three more points from Victoria McGee helped the Lady Jays keep the game close.
Larriviere scored four points early in the third period to help pull St. Edmund closer, 24-20.
Kaplan responded with a 5-0 run before a three pointer from Lady Jay Sydney Thibodeaux closed the margin to 29-23.
St. Edmund closed the gap to 31-29 with buckets by Gabby Fontenot and Larriviere and a trey from Allison Lafleur.
A put-back shot later by Lafleur pulled the Lady Jays within two points (33-31) with 3:31 left in the game.
Fontenot nailed a trey and later made a free throw to force a 35-35 tie with 1:47 remaining but Kaplan hit four free throws in the closing minutes to seal the win.
Larriviere led St. Edmund with 16 points, while Tory Riggs scored 12 points for Kaplan.
The Lady Jays will entertain Pine Prairie on Tuesday.
Kaplan 81, St. Ed’s 57
The Pirates jumped out to a 24-17 first quarter lead and never looked back as Kaplan grabbed a 81-57 win over the Blue Jays.
After William Chachere hit a trey to open the game for the Blue Jays, Kaplan responded with a 8-0 run.
Cullen Brown and Austin Gradney pushed in buckets for the Jays as St. Edmund battled to stay in the game, 14-11.
Brown and Dylan Bieber both scored in the closing minute of the first quarter before Dane Bertrand nailed a trey to push the Pirates ahead 24-17.
After Kaplan extended its lead to 29-20, Chachere hit a lay-up to slow down the Pirates.
Two more buckets by John Ross Guillory helped the Blue Jays close the gap to 34-28 with 2:49 left in the half.
Kaplan closed the first half with a 6-1 run to push ahead, 45-29 at the break.
The Blue Jays fought back in the third period to outscore the Pirates 14-12 and close the margin to 57-43.
Bieber scored in the lane, Gradney hit two free throws and Guillory added five points to close the gap to 54-40 midway through the period.
A jumper by Brown and another free throw by Gradney finished the Blue Jay scoring in the quarter.
The Pirates went on a 24-14 run in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Kaplan opened with an 11-2 run before Alex Dupre hit seven free throws for the Jays and then put in a bucket off the glass to help St. Edmund close the margin to 75-54 with 2:50 left.
A jumper by Christian Fontenot and a free throw by Dupre closed the Blue Jay scoring.
Guillory led the Jays with 14 points, while Gradney and Dupre each added 10 points.
Gratz led Kaplan with 14 points, while Dylan Touchet and Quintlin Cobb both contributed 11 points.
