Bobcats remain perfect in district
The Eunice High Bobcats improved their District 5-3A record to 8-0 and their overall mark to 21-5 with a 6-2 victory over the Church Point High Bears in baseball action Thursday night at Bobcat Field.
The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the second inning off Bears’ starting pitcher Troy Matte.
Wes Hebert singled and Tyler Darbonne drew a walk. Josh Youngblood was hit by a pitch and to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Hebert.
The Cats added two runs in the third for a 3-0 lead. Christian Lejeune singled to open the inning.
With two out, Matte walked Darbonne and Youngblood reached on an error to load the bases. Caleb Taylor walked to score Lejeune before Jonas Granger was hit by a pitch to Darbonne.
Matte was relieved at that point by Wes Higginbotham, who recorded the third out to end the inning.
The Cats managed another run in the fourth for a 4-0 lead. Lejeune singled with one out and went to third on an error.
Darbonne drove home courtesy runner Austin Phillips with a sacrifice fly.
The Bears got their first run in the fifth inning. Matte opened the inning with a single and would eventually score after Lejeune issued a walk and hit a batter, and Austin Benoit would drive Matte home.
The Cats answered by scoring two runs in the fifth. Cade Richard was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a passed ball.
Logan Manuel singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Christian Taylor.
Christian Taylor relieved Lejeune with two outs in the fifth and recorded the final out, but the Bears managed a run off him in the sixth. Collin Latiolais doubled, Higginbotham singled, and Zach Ray’s sacrifice fly scored Latiolais to make it 6-2.
The Raiders scored a run in the top of the fifth. Christian Rideau and Alex Fontenot had singles to open the inning. Rideau would later score when Fontenot was picked off and stayed in a rundown to allow Rideau to score.
Taylor would settle down, retiring the last four Bears in order to end the game and earn a save.
The Bobcats enter the last week of district play on Tuesday with a visit to Port Barre.
Eunice will entertain Pine Prairie Thursday, which will also be Senior Night for the Bobcats.
