Bobcats roll past Gators
The Eunice High Bobcats exploded for 14 runs in the first three innings on their way to a 14-2 victory over the Beau Chene High Gators in District 4-4A action Thursday night at Bobcat Field.
Coach Scott Phillips’ Bobcats scored four runs in the first inning, five in the second, and five in the third to take control of the game in the early going. Junior hurler Caleb Taylor made use of the offensive fireworks of his teammates, scattering seven hits, issuing no walks, and giving up two runs. Taylor improved his record to 3-2 on the season. Taylor Plumb worked two innings and suffered the mound loss for the Gators.
In the four-run first inning, Gunner Fontenot singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Logan Manuel. After Jordan Comeaux drew a walk, singles by Wes Hebert, Alex Sonnier, and Christian Lejeune brought home the runs.
In the second inning, Bobcat shortstop Cade Richard opened the inning with a single and Fontenot followed with a single. Both runners moved up on a groundout by Manuel before Comeaux drove in Richard from third base with a groundout. Hebert drew a walk, Sonnier doubled home a run, and another scored when Lejeune reached on an error. Taylor ended the scoring with a run-scoring single to make it 9-0.
Hebert had the game’s biggest hit in the third inning when he blasted a grand slam home run over the center-field fence. It was Hebert’s fifth home run of the season. Lejeune had a double and Taylor another run-scoring single to complete the inning.
The Gators got their two runs in the fifth. Caleb Williams singled and scored on a double by Mason Oswald. Oswald later scored on a sacrifice fly by Plumb.
The loss dropped the Gators to 12-6 overall and to 4-2 in district play. The Bobcats improved to 12-8 overall and to 4-2 in district play. Next action for the Cats comes at home on Tuesday against Opelousas High in a 6 p.m. start.
