Lady Jays fall to Mangham in regionals
MANGHAM - The No, 4 Mangham Lady Dragons grabbed an early lead and held on for a 5-2 win over St. Edmund in the Class 1-A softball regionals.
The Lady Jays (12-9) threatened in the top of the first innings when Baylee Lafleur singled but was left stranded.
The Lady Dragons (23-8) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the inning begun when Miranda Smart walked and Kennedy Heisler reached on an error.
Graycen Dye singled to short to score Heisler for a 1-0 lead.
Meagan Duchesne reached on a fielder’s choice and later scored on a passed ball.
The Lady Dragons added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning for a 4-0 lead.
Dye singled and scored on a hit by Anna Claire Romero.
Smart reached on an error to drive in Rachel Collins.
The Lady Jays scored twice in the top of the fourth to close the gap to 4-2.
Candance Fontentot singled, Maddie Andrus reached on an error and both scored when Sydney Thibodeaux doubled to left field.
Mangham added an insurance run when Karley Poindexter homered to centerfield.
The Lady Jays threatened to make the game closer in the top of the sixth inning when Fontenot singled, Baylee Lafleur reached on a fielder’s choice and Heather Beiber advanced on an infield error.
But two defensive plays halted the Lady Jay surge as Mangham advanced to the state tournament quarterfinals to face No. 12 Cedar Creek.
