Lady Jays win home opener
After giving up the lead in the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Jays responded with four runs as St. Edmund rallied to a 9-7 win over Crowley on Monday in their home opener.
Trailing 5-3 the Ladies responded, Bailee Villejoin doubled to center and scored on passed ball. Melania Doughty walked, Kristen Bonin singled and both scored on a double by Taylor Graboski.
Kaitlyn Killmer then capped the Crowley comeback with a double to plate Doughty and Brown, while Killmer scored on a pick-off attempt throwing error.
St. Edmund regrouped and stole the win from the jaws of defeat with four runs and timely hits.
Heidi Bieber reached on a fielder’s choice, while Jada Fontenot and Constance Fontenot followed with back-to-back singles.
Heidi Bieber and Jada Fontenot scored on a double to centerfield by Heather Bieber to tie the game, 7-7.
Baylee Lafleur kept the inning alive with a single and Maddie Andrus then belted a double to the fence to plate Constance Fontenot and Heather Bieber to seal the win.
“It was great to see the way we can back and put runs on the board after things didn’t go our way,” St. Edmund head coach Ashley Ray said. “We hit the ball well and everybody did what we needed to do to walk away with a win on our home field.”
The Ladies (1-6) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Skylor Huval reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a passed ball.
The Lady Jays (3-3) quickly answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame, begun as Heidi Bieber was hit by a pitch, Jada Fontenot singled and the duo scored on a double by Constance Fontenot.
Constance Fontenot later scored when Baylee Lafleur reached on an error to give the Lady Jays a 3-1 advantage.
Crowley scored two runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game, aided by back-to-back doubles by Huval and Maddie LeBouef.
LeBouef scored on a RBI to right field by Kristen Bonin, but the rally was halted and she was left at first base.
The Lady Jays retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, sparked when Constance Fontenot singled and scored on a triple to right field by Heather Bieber.
Beiber scored on a fielder’s choice by Andrus to push the Lady Jays ahead, 5-3.
Constance Fontenot went 4-for-4 with three runs scored, two doubles and two RBI to lead the Lady Jays.
Heather Bieber went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI, while Jada Fontenot went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Andrus went 1-for-4 with a fielder’s choice, a double and three RBI.
Kasey Lafleur earned the win for the Lady Jays as she allowed seven runs on 12 hits with a strikeout and a walk.
Kaitlyn Killmer was handed the loss as she allowed nine runs on 12 hits with a hitbatsman.
After a scheduled road trip to Westminster, the Lady Jays will participate in the Mamou tournament this weekend.
