Lady Jays win on Senior Day
The Lady Jay seniors were honored before Thursday’s game and then the four did their part to help St. Edmund grab a crucial 6-1 win over Westminster Christian Academy.
St. Edmund (11-11, 3-1) faces Catholic High of Pointe Coupee (9-8, 4-0) Tuesday and Thursday with the district title on the line.
“They have played almost every inning over the past two seasons,” coach Tad Richard said of Victoria McGee, Sydney Thibodeaux, Kasey LaFleur and Heidi Bieber. “They are great players on defense and good hitters on offense.
“They are leaders for us,” Richard said. “They leave it all on the field.”
Westminster grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when lead-off hitter Autumn Brazier walked and scored on a hit by Brianna Winston.
The Lady Jays tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Bieber walked and scored on a passed ball.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the fourth when Lafleur doubled to left field and scored on McGee’s double to centerfield.
The Lady Jays exploded for four runs in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.
Bieber walked, senior catcher Sydney Thibodeaux singled and Gabby Fontenot walked to load the bases.
Lafleur hit a shot to left field to score Bieber before McGee’s triple cleared the bases.
Lafleur earned the win as she allowed one run on one hit with sevenwalks and 10 strikeouts.
McGee went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and four RBI.
Lafleur went 2-for-3 with double and a RBI.
Beiber went 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored.
Thibodeaux went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
Abby Miller (1-for-3) had the other hit for the Lady Jays.
