St. Martin man driver dies after crash

An elderly Breaux Bridge man was killed Monday afternoon when he drove into the path of an on-coming vehicle.
State Police said the crash occurred on LA 328 near Poche Bridge Road.
Preliminary investigation revealed Ray Calais, 88, of Breaux Bridge was driving a 2013 Chevrolet SUV westbound on Poche Bridge Road, and stopped at a stop sign at its intersection with LA 328. A 1993 Ford Explorer operated by Jeremy Levier, 24, was traveling southbound on LA 328. As the Explorer approached the intersection of Poche Bridge Road, Calais began to make a left turn onto LA 328, directly into the path of the Explorer. The front of the Explorer struck the driver’s side of the Chevrolet SUV.
Calais was wearing a seat belt, but sustained critical injuries. Calais was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Levier and an occupant in the Explorer were transported to local hospitals in Lafayette with moderate injuries. Levier was not wearing a seatbelt.
Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in this crash, however; routine toxicology samples were taken and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
Levier was cited for no proof of insurance, no seat belt, driving under suspension and cancelled license plate.
