Higher education leaders delivered a united message Monday: further reductions in state funding will hinder the ability of Louisiana’s colleges and universities to meet work force demands.

Louisiana National Guardsmen in crash identified, remembered

Chief Warrant Officer 4 George Wayne Griffin Jr., of Delhi, was one of four Louisiana Army National Guardsmen killed in a UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter crash, March 10. Griffin commissioned as a warrant officer in 1999 before eventually going on to become the battalion standardization pilot with over 6,000 flight hours, including more than 1,000 combat hours. The soldiers were participating in a routine night-time training exercise with the Marine 2nd Special Operations Battalion when the Black Hawk crashed into the Santa Rosa Sound, east of the Navarre Bridge in Florida. Dirty socks and a dead fish were among  the 209 pounds of litter picked up in about 30 minutes Friday in Leaders Against Litter. 

Dance hall memories

The Oleander, located on the west side of Eunice, featured a motel, restaurant and a lounge called the Pony Room. Eunice was once home to about 30 dance halls, including the Pony Room.

“Turn at the Wagon Wheel” was no doubt once part of driving directions in L’Anse Aux Pailles, but since the Hicks Wagon Wheel dance hall burned down in the 1970s, locations of many such clubs have long been forgotten.
