Registrar facing felony damages charge
Registrar of Voters John Moreau holds a life-time job but could be removed if the St. Landry Parish Council thinks it has proper cause following his arrest on felony charges.
Moreau is accused of felony criminal damage to property -- allegedly scraping a key along the sides of a car parked in the courthouse parking lot in Opelousas.
Moreau, 51, has allegedly had an on-going dispute with the woman who owns the ar since early December.
The victim, Susan Gerace, 47, works in the office of 27th Judicial District Judge James Doherty, the same office in which Moreau’s wife works, according to published reports.
Moreau was appointed in 1985. By law, he holds the job for life unless removed for cause. He mother held the job for years before he was appointed.
An arrest is not necessarily defined as possible cause for removal, though a felony is. Persistent public conduct that brings the office into disrepute is also defined as cause.
