Teen pleads to killing, gets 30 years

August

An Abbeville teenager will spend at least 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to killing another man as a result of an argument over a bicycle and drugs.
Walter August, 19, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in last April's shooting death of Javonte Charles. He pleaded to manslaughter instead of going to trial on second-degree murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence if convicted.
August was sentenced to 30 years, meaning he will be in prison at least 25, officials said.
August shot Charles about a week after he had beaten him up in an argument over a bicycle. Police said the two were involved in drug sales. Witnesses told police that the victim brandished a pistol at his slayer a few days before the killing.
