Lady Jays fall on Senior Night

The final score was in doubt until the last out, but Sacred Heart of Ville Platte grabbed a 6-5 win on Thursday to spoil St. Edmund’s Senior Night.
“They have been leaders for me and I have really enjoyed this group,” second-year head coach Ashley Ray said.
With the win, the No. 5 Lady Trojans (14-6, 5-1) sealed a Co-District 5-1A championship with top-ranked Catholic High of Pointe Coupee.
No. 14 St. Edmund (9-8, 2-4) closes the regular season at Vermilion Catholic on Monday and at home against Opelousas Catholic on Tuesday.
“We made errors we should not be making at this time of the season,” Ray said. “But hopefully we can fix that before the playoffs.
“We need to be playing better ball than we are,” the coach said.
Sacred Heart jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Courtney Cloud singled and scored on a sacrifice by Elizabeth Soileau.
St, Edmund rallied for three runs in the bottom of the second to excite the Lady Jay faithful.
Jami LeBeouf. Kasey LaFleur and Sydney Thibodeaux all singled to load the bases.
LeBouef scored on a singled by Heidi Bieber, while LaFleur crossed home plate when Jada Fontenot reached on an error.
Thibodeaux scored on a sacrifice by Constance Fontenot to give the Lady Jays a 3-1 advantage.
Sacred Heart exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth to retake the lead.
Gabby Andrepont singled, stole second and scored on a hit by Anna Marie Soileau.
Heather Fontenot and pinch runner Hannah Fontenot both scored when Hannah Lemoine’s hit was misplayed in the outfield.
Lemoine touched home plate on a double up the middle by Cloud.
Cloud would score on an other Lady Jay error as the Lady Trojans pushed ahead, 6-3.
The Lady Jays threatened in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but could not push any runs across.
Jada Fontenot (2-for-4) and Constance Fontenot (2-for-3) singled in the fourth, while Heather Bieber and Kasey LaFleur singled in the fifth and Constance Fontenot singled again in the sixth inning.
The Lady Jays battled to the end with a seventh-inning surge, led by a solo home run by Heather Bieber (2-for-3).
Maddie Andrus (1-for-3) doubled and scored on a passed ball to close the gap to 6-5.
Kasey LaFleur (3-for-4) singled and Heidi Bieber (2-for-4) walked, but neither could score.
The Lady Jays left 10 runners on base, while Sacred Heart stranded five base runners.
