St. Mary youngster with Down syndrome takes pride in his livestock

Affectionately known as “John John” by his family, friends and fans, John Sonnier, a 4-H’er from St. Mary Parish, was prepping to show his pigs at the LSU AgCenter’s state livestock show. He stopped occasionally to visit with people passing by and to show off his dance moves.

Eagles a bit shy but birdwatchers still watch

An eagle was caught in flight Friday over the Atchafalaya Basin during the boat tour that was part of the Eagle Expo sponsored by the Cajun Coast Visitors and Convention Bureau. The expo featured Wings to Soar presentations, a photography workshop by renowned wildlife photographer C.C. Lockwood, seminars and more.

Visitors were able to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of south Louisiana swamplands in the Atchafalaya Basin and surrounding areas during the ninth annual Wings to Soar Expo that concluded Saturday.

New nature trail opens in Vermilion

The cement columns were found in the wetlands behind the Grotto and are from the late 1800s. They were part of a rectory that was on the grounds in the late 1890s.

Seven years ago a group of Vermilion Parish residents had a vision to create a nature trail through an acre of wetlands along the Vermilion River at Bancker Grotto Memorial Park. On Saturday, that trail became a reality when it was open to the public.
