In December, St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz announced the Smooth Ride Home program had saved his office nearly $200,000.
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette awarded degrees to 1,362 graduates during Fall 2015 Commencement ceremonies on Friday.
It was the largest fall semester graduating class in the history of UL Lafayette.
Last week, I wondered in this column about the origin of a woman named La Christiane who distributed gifts to Cajuns at Christmas time. That was about all I knew about her, and that little was based on an article that appeared in the Morning Advocate in 1980.

Preparations for Eunice’s annual 4th of July Fireworks display have started early with some Christmastime fundraising.

Christmas Eve has arrived, and several local religious leaders have shared the Christmas messages they have for the community.
Eunice Police Department Lt. Donnie Thibodeaux, right, received the Supervisor of the Year award from Police Chief Randy Fontenot at the department’s Christmas Party held Friday at the American Legion Post on Park Avenue in Eunice. Thibodeaux started with the department in 2004. In 2007, he was promoted to sergeant and in June 2009 became a lieutenant. Thibodeaux has twice been elected as the department’s representative on the civil service board. “Donnie is a leader within the department, which is evidenced by his election to the civil service board for two terms. He is respected by the people who work for him,” Fontenot said. Thibodeaux also helps build the reputation of the department and the morale of the officers.” (Submitted Photo)

At the end of each regular semester, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette recognizes those students named to the President’s List and the Dean’s List. Eligible students must be enrolled fulltime.
LSU recognized 1,729 graduates at the university’s 288th commencement exercises on campus Friday, Dec. 18. LSU’s fall graduating class included the most degrees awarded to African American and Hispanic students during any fall semester.

Irice Ann Darbonne Lavergne passed away on Thursday November 17, 2016 at the age of 73.
Burial will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Eunice.
