Experience Louisiana Festival shaping up with eclectic touches

The Experience Louisiana Festival is a little over five weeks away and is “growing and growing and becoming a more and more neat project,” Dwight Jodon, one of the lead festival organizers said.
“I think right now it is just a big cultural gumbo,” Jodon said the upcoming festival.

Strain describes diverse missions of the La. Dept. of Agriculture & Forestry

Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry Michael Strain spoke to The Summit group recently about the many facets of his job and provided great insight into all of his various responsibilities. Blacksmith follows family craft tradition

Sam Riehl, blacksmith, is scheduled to demonstrate his craft at the Experience Louisiana Festival, Oct. 17-18, at the LSUE campus.

He journeyed with them to sell their craft, wandered as they sold their works and blacksmith Sam Riehl eventually took up the craft, just like his mother and grandmother before him.

Candidate forum planned by for House, Senate districts

The St. Landry Parish Democratic Executive Committee is planning a forum entitled, Democratic Forum 2015.
The forum will highlight those candidates for state senator- District 24 and state representative District Number 40.

Festival fundraising concert planned Friday

Connie Garrett and Louisiana Red will play at the Liberty Center at 7 p.m. Friday to help raise funds for the Experience Louisiana Festival.
The concert is sponsored by Eunice Rotary Club, LSUE Performing Arts Series and the City of Eunice.

Many St. Landry Parish incumbents unopposed

The nameplates are staying in place for many St. Landry Parish elected officials as qualifying for the Oct. 24 election closed Thursday with no opponents surfacing.
Sheriff Bobby Guidroz is unopposed. Parish President Bill Fontenot is headed toward a second term.

Vidrine man has had lifelong passion for exotic animals

A group of zebras eat corn and roam the field during a recent afternoon on the farmland that rests behind Mike Lafleur’s home in Vidrine. Lafleur has owned and raised zebras since 1996 and two of his zebras are expecting to give birth sometime in October. Lafleur has also owned camels, monkeys and wolves over the years. The sound of a car horn, and the repeated pushing of his door bell, awakened Mike Lafleur from his sleep in the middle of the night.
