Homecoming week at Eunice High started off on a sad note as students at the school learned their schoolmate Julia Watford, 16, and her younger sister Jayia, 9, had died by the hands of their own mother during a murder-suicide.

A house next to Ball Marketing on La. 370 (Attebury Road) was a total loss after catching fire at about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Richard Fire Chief Dusty Edwards said. The house, owned by Susan Goss, was undergoing renovations when a fire that started in a dump truck behind the house caught fire, he said. There were no injuries, he said. Firefighters from Acadia Fire District 4, Richard, Branch, Mire, Eunice, St. Landry Parish Fire District 6 and Church Point responded to the fire. Edwards said the house is about 100 years old and the fire spread quickly through the old, dry wood. The location is about halfway between Eunice and Church Point.
